GitHub integration

Your pull requests, on the cards they finish.

Connect a project to GitHub and the commits and pull requests that name a card link themselves to it. Merging a pull request that names the card moves it to done, and when a deployment reaches production the card shows which commits are live.

How linking works

Name the card, that is all

Put the card key, such as ACM-14, in a commit message, or in a pull request's branch name, title or description. TaskDeck links it to the card; nobody pastes URLs. A pull request that names no card links to the cards its commits name.

Merge moves the card

Opening or updating a pull request only links it. Merging a pull request that names the card in its branch, title or description moves the card to the board's done column, so the board follows the code without a second step. One linked only through its commits shows as merged and moves nothing.

See what is live

When GitHub reports a deployment to production, the card marks each of its commits Live, Deploying or Deploy failed, so "is it out?" has an answer on the card.

History comes along

Connecting a repository also reads the commits on its default branch and its pull requests since the project was created, up to the latest thousand of each, so earlier work links to its cards too. The import only links; it never moves a card.

On the card

A Development section lists the card's pull requests with their state, Open, Draft, Merged or Closed, and its commits with their short hash and deployment status. Anyone who can edit the card can remove a link that does not belong there.

Connect GitHub

  1. Open your project's settings and go to Integrations. You need to be a project admin.

  2. Connect the GitHub account or organisation where the TaskDeck.me GitHub App is installed, or install it there.

  3. Pick the repositories this project works in; several can be connected at once.

  4. Name a card key in your next commit or pull request and watch it appear on the card.

Sign in to TaskDeck with GitHub and the moves your pull requests make on the board are credited to you.

Questions about the GitHub integration

Does opening a pull request move the card?

No. Opening and updating a pull request only link it to the card. Merging it moves the card to the done column when the pull request names the card in its branch, title or description.

Which deployments count as live?

Deployments to an environment whose name begins with the word production or prod, in upper or lower case, such as Vercel's "Production – web", and to any environment GitHub marks as production. Staging and preview deployments change nothing on the card.

Which plans include GitHub?

Every plan, the Free plan included.

What happens when I disconnect a repository?

TaskDeck stops listening to it and removes its links from the cards. Disconnecting GitHub from the project removes every repository it connected.
