How to give Claude Code a task board

Connect Claude Code to TaskDeck, install the TaskDeck plugin and run /taskdeck:track in your project. From then on each task Claude Code takes on there becomes a card on your board, with the reason and acceptance criteria up front, progress as comments and a verified finish.

Why Claude Code needs a board

A Claude Code session ends and its context goes with it. A card stays, so the work keeps its reasons, its progress and its proof after the session closes.

  • Your team sees what Claude Code is working on, on the same board as everyone else.
  • Each task starts with acceptance criteria and finishes only when they are verified.
  • With GitHub or GitLab connected, commits and pull requests that name the card link to it.
  • The next session, yours or Claude's, picks up from the card instead of from memory.

Set it up in four steps

You need a TaskDeck account on the Pro or Max plan, which include AI connections. These are the same commands TaskDeck shows under Profile → Connections.

For Claude Code in a terminal or an IDE.

  1. Connect TaskDeck

Run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user taskdeck https://mcp.taskdeck.me/mcp
  2. Install the TaskDeck plugin

Why: The plugin adds the /taskdeck:track command to Claude Code. It sets up tracking for a project in one step instead of by hand: it picks or creates the board, turns tracking on and writes a short block into the project's CLAUDE.md. Step 1 alone is enough to work with your boards.

    Run these two commands:

    claude plugin marketplace add Ampliative/taskdeck-plugin
    claude plugin install taskdeck@taskdeck
  3. Sign in to TaskDeck

Start a new Claude Code session, run /mcp and sign in to TaskDeck from there:

    /mcp
  4. Track a project

In your project folder, run this command. It picks a board and turns tracking on, so every task Claude does in that project becomes a card.

    /taskdeck:track

Prefer editing the settings file? Instead of step 1, add this under "mcpServers" in ~/.claude.json:

"taskdeck": { "type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.taskdeck.me/mcp" }

What happens on the board

Tracking writes a short block into the project's CLAUDE.md. Claude Code reads it and follows four steps for every task that changes something.

  1. The card opens before the work starts

Claude Code calls start-work with a title, the reason and the acceptance criteria. TaskDeck checks for an open card that already covers the work, then creates the card with the criteria as its checklist and moves it to the working column.

  2. Progress goes on the card

As it works, Claude Code comments on the card: the approach, the files it changed, the commands it ran and what they returned. Each criterion is ticked the moment it is verified.

  3. Commits link to the card

A commit whose message names the card key links to the card, and merging a pull request that names it moves the card to done. This needs GitHub or GitLab connected to the project.

  4. The card closes with proof

When the work is verified, finish-work posts the verification notes and moves the card to review, or to done on a board without a review column. It refuses while a criterion is still unverified.

Use the board without tracking

The first step alone gives Claude Code the TaskDeck tools. Ask in plain words, for example:

  • What is on my TaskDeck board, and what is overdue?
  • Create a card for the login timeout bug with a checklist of what to check.
  • Move the card about the export fix to review and comment on what you changed.

Questions about Claude Code and TaskDeck

Do I need the plugin?

No. The first step alone connects Claude Code to your boards. The plugin adds /taskdeck:track, which sets up tracking for a project in one step: it picks or creates the board, turns tracking on and writes the block into CLAUDE.md.

Does every message to Claude Code become a card?

No. Claude Code opens a card when it starts a task that changes something. Questions, exploration and one-off commands that change nothing need no card.

Can Claude Code's work carry its own name?

Yes. When you set up tracking, it asks whose name Claude's work carries: yours or one of your AI agents'. The cards then show that name.

Where does it work?

In Claude Code in a terminal, in the Claude desktop app's Code tab and in IDEs.

Which plans include it?

Pro and Max. The Free plan doesn't include AI assistant connections.
